    What Makes Bira So Irresistible?

Bira is defined by a raw, uncommercialized beauty. While it is a small village that has recently blossomed into a modest resort hub, it has successfully retained its charm and authenticity.

    • The Powder-Soft Beaches: Bira is famous for its bright white, incredibly fine sand. Tanjung Bira Beach offers a lively atmosphere, while the adjacent Bara Beach is a secluded, serene haven, perfect for watching the spectacular daily sunsets.
    • The Underwater World: Bira sits at a key junction in the coral triangle, offering world-class diving and snorkeling. The waters are clear, often with great visibility, leading to deep walls where you can encounter pelagic species and a healthy population of reef sharks, turtles, and rays.
    • The Phinisi Heritage: Bira is globally famous as one of the last places on earth where the legendary Phinisi Schooners—magnificent, two-masted wooden sailing vessels—are still built entirely by hand. Visiting the nearby boatyards to witness this incredible, generational craftsmanship is a profound cultural experience you won't find anywhere else.
    • Star Gazing: With minimal light pollution, Bira is perfectly situated beneath the Milky Way, making it one of the best places in Indonesia to watch the night sky.
    • Learn about coral and try reef restoration: Our partner Gaia One runs courses here that teach you about corals and you can have a first hand experience in planting corals and helping to restore the reefs of the area.

Tevana House & The GaiaOne Foundation

The driving force behind this vision is the GaiaOne Foundation. Founded in 2020 by Noortasha, who transitioned from a career as a lawyer to a dedicated ocean conservationist, GaiaOne is an initiative focused on three main pillars:

    1. Net Zero Impact: Creating a model for eco-tourism that minimizes environmental impact, from single-use plastic reduction to responsible resource management.
    2. Nature for the Future: Actively working to conserve marine ecosystems through hands-on restoration, including significant coral restoration projects in Bira and the surrounding islands.
    3. Generational Uplift: Transforming human understanding of nature through education and providing opportunities for local communities to be part of the conservation solution.

By choosing to stay and dine at Tevana House Reef, you directly support GaiaOne’s projects, funding initiatives like their beach and ocean trash cleanup campaigns and the crucial work of replanting their local reefs.

Learn to Free Dive And Restoring The Reefs

Bira's natural beauty is truly best experienced under water. Its unique coastal topography, featuring calm, crystal-clear shallows and challenging deep walls, makes it an unparalleled destination for all water enthusiasts, whether you enjoy scuba diving, snorkelling, or free-diving.

Most commercial dive shops focus solely on technique, often neglecting the surrounding environment - the reefs! You'll learn about the vibrant tropical fish and the vital coral reefs that provide their habitat. We believe knowledge of this beautiful ecosystem is important so you can also become a champion to conserve and restore the fast disappearing reefs.

GaiaOne’s "Free-diving For The Reef" is an immersive 8-day experience. This all-inclusive getaway allows you to master the art of free-diving while actively participating in coral restoration and learning about marine life, including corals and turtles. Accommodations, yoga and breathwork sessions are all included in the package.

This is a unique opportunity to withdraw for a week to a tropical paradise, learn to free-dive, and directly contribute to the local economy of this remote community, and help replant the coral reefs of Bira.

    Getting to Bira

Bira’s remote location is what preserves its tranquility, but getting there requires a little planning.

    1. Fly to Makassar (UPG): The journey starts with a flight to Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG) in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi. There are many connections from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bali.
    2. Travel by Road: From Makassar, Bira is approximately 190–200 km away. The trip takes roughly 5 to 6 hours by road. We can help arrange this for you.

    Committed to saving nature together

Our partnership with Gaia One is a cornerstone of our commitment to Bira and its future. By joining us, you will directly contribute to the efforts to rebuild the reefs in this stunning corner of Sulawesi, creating more habitats for marine life and ensuring Bira remains a vibrant, healthy ecosystem for generations to come.
